About this calculator

A concrete slab is priced by volume, so the only numbers that matter are length, width, and how thick you pour it. Enter the dimensions below and you'll get the volume in cubic yards (how ready-mix is sold), the equivalent in bags for smaller pours, and a built-in waste allowance so you don't come up short halfway through.

How the math works

The math is simply length × width × thickness, with everything converted to the same unit. Slab thickness is entered in inches because that's how it's spec'd on site, then divided by 12 to turn it into feet before multiplying. That gives cubic feet; dividing by 27 converts to cubic yards.

Common questions

How thick should a slab be?

4 inches is the standard for patios, walkways, and shed floors. Bump to 5–6 inches for driveways or anything carrying vehicle weight. Thickness drives volume directly, so going from 4" to 6" adds 50% to your concrete order.

Do I need to account for the slab edges?

If you're pouring a thickened edge or a footing around the perimeter, calculate that separately with the footing calculator and add the two volumes together.

What strength concrete?

Most residential slabs use 3,000–4,000 PSI mix. Your ready-mix supplier will ask, but it doesn't change the volume, only the price per yard slightly.
